The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “The lawful is clear and the unlawful is clear, and between them are doubtful matters that many people do not know. Whoever guards against the doubtful matters protects his religion and his honor.”

Beer — is it halal?

Ruling: Haram

Description

Beer is a drink of alcoholic fermentation of brewer’s wort from malt, hops and water with brewer’s yeast, without added alcohol; part of the malt may be replaced by grain. “Alcohol-free” beer and beer drinks with no more than 0.5 % alcohol are excluded in the EAEU from the alcoholic products regulation, but they contain alcohol. Brewer’s wort is the water extract of brewing raw materials before fermentation.

Basis of the ruling

Beer is a drink of alcoholic fermentation of wort from malt, hops and water with brewer's yeast; part of the malt is replaced with grain. It is an intoxicating drink. 'Alcohol-free' beer (up to 0.5 %) is also haram: intoxicating beer is produced first, and removing the alcohol does not purify it.
