The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “The lawful is clear and the unlawful is clear, and between them are doubtful matters that many people do not know. Whoever guards against the doubtful matters protects his religion and his honor.”

Bacon — is it halal?

Ruling: Haram

Description

Bacon is cured pork belly, traditionally smoked. In the US 9 CFR 319.107 sets a weight rule for cured pork bellies labelled “Bacon”; in the EAEU “bacon” is a permitted anatomical name of a meat product, without species. Products of turkey, beef and other species are also sold as “bacon”; in the known examples the species is part of the name (“turkey bacon”, “beef bacon”).

Basis of the ruling

Bacon is cured, usually smoked pork belly. Curing and smoking do not change the essence of the meat, so there is no istihala. The pig is impure in essence and all its parts are forbidden. Turkey or beef products sold as 'bacon' carry the species in the name ('turkey bacon')
