The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “The lawful is clear and the unlawful is clear, and between them are doubtful matters that many people do not know. Whoever guards against the doubtful matters protects his religion and his honor.”

Mutton fat (tail fat) — is it halal?

Ruling: Haram

Description

Mutton fat is sheep adipose tissue (tail and internal fat) and the fat rendered from it. Under CXS 211-1999 edible tallow (dripping) is made from fatty tissue of cattle and/or sheep, so “tallow” may also be mutton fat.

Basis of the ruling

Mutton fat is the tail and internal fat of sheep and the fat rendered from it; edible tallow may also be mutton fat. Rendering only separates the fat from the tissue — the fat remains the same fat, its essence does not change.
