Sadaqat al-fitr and the sacrifice with surplus property and land that provides one’s livelihood

Question

A person has no cash, nor jewellery that would amount to the nisab; however, he has arable land, houses in excess of what he needs to live in, utensils besides those used for eating and drinking, a stock of grain left over after his food, and a shop full of goods. Will he be called an owner of the nisab (sahib al-nisab) on account of these things or not, and will the obligation of sadaqa and the sacrifice fall upon him or not?

Answer

If the surplus house, surplus utensils, surplus livestock, surplus tools and surplus grain reach the value of the nisab, then sadaqat al-fitr and the sacrifice are wajib upon him. As for the land on whose income his livelihood depends, hajj does not become fard on account of it, even if its value could suffice for the expenses of hajj.
