Acting on precaution regarding the weight of the sa‘

Question

According to a certain imam, the sa‘ is 252 tolas (a unit of weight, ≈ 11.66 g); the late Mawlana Ruh al-Amin wrote this in his book of fatwas. The book of Mufti Muhammad Shafi‘ ﵀ was studied: in it the reckoning is 270 tolas, and a sa‘ of 252 tolas was not found. If the fitra (sadaqat al-fitr) is paid by the reckoning of a sa‘ of 252 tolas, will the fitra be discharged or not?

Answer

When the weight of the sa‘ is converted into tolas and seers (seer: a unit of weight, ≈ 0.93 kg), some difference arises in the reckoning, as is known from looking at Bihishti Zewar (“Heavenly Ornaments”), Fatawa Rashidiyya, Imdad al-Fatawa and Mazahir-i Haqq.
