At What Rate Sadaqat al-Fitr Is to Be Paid
Question
The situation of control (government price regulation) is clear to everyone. If brokers secretly sell goods, taking a price higher than the fixed price — is this permissible or not? (The broker bought and brought the goods with his own money; the only point is that certain conditions were imposed compulsorily by the government, not by the owner.) And will the fitra be discharged at the price of the control rate or not?
Answer
If it does not come to breaking a promise or lying, and there is no danger to one’s honour or of loss of property (as, for instance, when it becomes known, a court case is brought and a fine is imposed), then it is correct. If he obtains his own provisions at the control rate as well, then paying sadaqat al-fitr at that rate is also correct.
