Is ‘Ushr Still Obligatory Now?

Question

On which cultivators, and on what quantity of produce, is the fortieth and the twentieth part wajib?

Answer

After the abolition of the landlord system, the lands of India passed into the ownership of the present government, so ‘ushr is not wajib. However, if someone gives for the sake of good and blessing, it is a cause of reward and a cause of warding off calamities. In “Mishkat” it says: [ar]إن الصدقة لتطفئ غضب الرب وتدفع ميتة السوء.
