Using zakat for a lawsuit over a graveyard

Question

Respected Mufti! The pressing request is this: non-Muslims have seized a graveyard, a lawsuit is under way over it, and a collection of donations is being made, but some people are giving zakat money. May zakat money be given towards the expenses of the lawsuit or not?

Answer

It is not valid to give zakat money for spending on the graveyard lawsuit either. Let it be given to someone entitled to it (mustahiqq); if he, after taking possession as owner, gives (it), then spending it here too will be valid.
