Are the Maternal Grandfather, Maternal Uncle and Paternal Uncle Recipients of Zakat?

Question

Zayd is an owner of the nisab (sahib al-nisab), and his maternal grandfather is poor. May Zayd give zakat to his maternal grandfather, or to his maternal uncle or paternal uncle, or not?

Answer

The maternal grandfather, despite being poor, is not a recipient of zakat. To the maternal uncle, the paternal uncle and their children, if they are poor, he may give it.
