Zakat to a son-in-law

Question

Zayd wishes to have his son-in-law Bakr receive an English education and to meet his expenses from the zakat account — for example, to give one hundred rupees every month. May Zayd in this way pay his son-in-law’s expenses from the zakat account or not?

Answer

If the son-in-law is poor, that is, he is not an owner of the nisab (he does not own fifty-two and a half tolas (a unit of weight, ≈ 11.66 g) of silver or cash of that value), and he is also not a sayyid, then it is valid to give him zakat, and the zakat will thereby be discharged.
