Who deserves zakat: a widowed sister supported by her brother
Question
Everyone is negligent of the obligation (farida) of paying zakat. Zayd’s sister Hinda was widowed; Zayd brought Hinda to his home; Hinda has three sons with her. Zayd is a wealthy man worth hundreds of thousands of rupees: he has about a hundred bighas (a local unit of area) of land on which an orchard has been raised, and a money trade so large that trucks go as far as the east of the country.
Answer
Whatever amount is given to Hinda with the intention of zakat — provided it is neither compensation for service, nor in exchange for her paternal [inheritance] share, nor [given] under pressure from her (lest she demand the inheritance), and Hinda is also entitled to zakat, i.e. she does not own 52½ tolas (a unit of weight, ≈ 11.66 g)
