Which value is taken into account when paying zakat?

Question

At what rate should zakat be paid on gold and silver jewellery, given that at the time of purchase the price of gold and silver was much lower than at present? Thus, at the time of purchase gold was sold at the rate of 24 rupees per bhar (a unit of weight for gold, about one tola), and now it is sold at 115 rupees per bhar.

Answer

Gold and silver are both things measured by weight; in them weight is taken into account both for the nisab and for paying zakat, and value is not taken into account. Therefore, if the nisab of both is complete, the fortieth part of both is to be given in zakat, whatever the price may be.
