Zakat on a banknote

Question

If someone has a hundred-rupee banknote, is it wajib to give two and a half rupees as its zakat, or two and a half tolas (a unit of weight, ≈ 11.66 g) of silver?

Answer

Whether he gives two and a half rupees, or gives two and a half tolas of silver, or gives some other thing worth the value of two and a half tolas of silver — all of it is permissible.
