Question
In our time many religious madrasas have been established in our country in which, along with teaching, board and lodging for the students is also arranged. All the sources of income are generally the donations, zakat and sadaqat of the public. Is this permissible? Is there a precedent for it in the time of the Companions and the Successors ﵃? If not, then what would be the basis for its permissibility?
Answer
The precedent for the religious madrasas and institutions of learning of the present age is the life of the Ashab al-Suffa (the People of the Platform) in the era of prophethood ﵊.
