Does Praying Maghrib in a Certain Mosque for Four Years Earn the Reward of Hajj?

Question

In the city of Burhanpur, since the time of Hazrat Shah Nizamuddin Bhikari, the Maghrib prayer has been held near his shrine, in the bed of the river; the khatib of the Congregational Mosque leads the Maghrib prayer. People travel from far and wide for it, and it has been spread about that whoever prays Maghrib there for 4 years or 7 years obtains the reward of one Hajj. Is it permissible to pray in this way, to lead such a prayer, and to hold such a belief? Is there any basis for it in the Qur’an and Hadith?

Answer

This practice has no basis; there is no basis for it in the Shari‘a. A special reward is explicitly stated in the hadiths for three mosques: (1) the Sacred Mosque (al-Masjid al-Haram), (2) the Prophet’s Mosque (al-Masjid al-Nabawi), (3) the al-Aqsa Mosque.
