Who Is the Founder of a Mosque?
Question
(1) Which person, and at what time, can be called the founder (bani) of a mosque? (2) After Zayd’s death, in accordance with his bequest, one of his sons built a mosque on land that had been made waqf. Then, after 20–25 years, another son sold the materials of the first mosque and, putting in that money together with additional money of his own, and also collecting donations from people, built a second mosque. So which of them will be the founder of the mosque — or can all of them be called founders of the mosque?
Answer
(1) Whoever builds a mosque at whatever time is its founder. (2) The first person is the first founder and the second person is the second founder; and those people who contributed money to it and laboured on it are also partners in the building.
