Voting in Return for a Promise of Waqf
Question
Zayd wants to get several Muslims to vote in his favour for his membership (of an elected body), and says that in return he will have some improvement, repairs and so on done in the mosque, will build some building for the mosque’s expenses, and will make its income — the rent — a waqf for the mosque. So is it permissible to accept help for the mosque and have construction done from such money?
Answer
If Zayd is truly worthy of membership, then one should give him one’s vote and make him a member. And if Zayd, with the intention of earning reward — even if it be in gratitude for the membership — has construction done for the mosque or makes something a waqf, there is nothing objectionable in this; rather, it brings reward.
