The Truth About the Ansar “Handing Over” Their Wives to the Muhajirun

Question

When the caravan of the Muhajirun arrived from Mecca the Noble at Medina the Radiant, the Ansar handed their wives over to the Muhajirun — how, in that case, did the matter of nikah stand?

Answer

It is false that the Ansar handed their wives over to the Muhajirun. Some of them said [to a Muhajir]: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has made you my brother; if a father were to die leaving two brothers, the two of them would divide the inheritance equally between them — now you are my brother, so take half of my wealth.
