How to Understand the War Between Yazid and Husayn ﵁

Question

Are Yazid and the participants in the killing of Imam Husayn ﵁ fasiq (transgressors) and fajir (wicked) or not? Can the battle of Karbala be called a battle of truth against falsehood (batil) or not?

Answer

The explanation of [the term] “fasiq” is given in “Sharh al-‘Aqa’id” and other [books]. Hazrat Husayn ﵁ waged this war in order to save [Allah’s] creation from the domination of a tyrant (zalim), as stated in “Fatawa ‘Aziziyya” and “Tuhfa Ithna ‘Ashariyya”.
