Saying While Drunk: “I Have Given My Wife Talaq and Handed Her Over to You”

Question

Four men sat in a house and drank wine, and in their drunkenness they were saying to one another: “میں نے تجھے اپنی بیوی دی” (“I have given you my wife”); another said: “میں نے تجھے دی” (“I have given [her] to you”). In the morning, when they had come to their senses, one of them says: “Last night you exchanged wives among yourselves, and each of you mentioned the word ‘talaq’ thus: ‘مجھے طلاق میں نے اپنی بیوی کو تمہارے حوالہ کیا’ (‘Talaq to me, I have handed my wife over to you’)

Answer

First of all, all these people should repent of drinking wine, because of which this ill-omen came about and they became deserving of curse; then, as a precaution, each should renew the offer and acceptance (ijab and qabul) with his own wife in the presence of two witnesses.
