Divorcing One’s Wife at the Parents’ Behest
Question
We, husband and wife, are on good terms with each other. I study at a madrasa, and my wife lives with her parents. My mother fell ill, and my grandfather brought my wife so that she would look after her mother-in-law. After staying two days, my wife went off to her parents without permission. The women of the neighbourhood tried their utmost to make her see sense, and my grandfather tried too, but she listened to no one. My aunt (my paternal uncle’s wife)
Answer
Your wife’s conduct displeased your parents: she left without permission at such a difficult time. Now she is asking for forgiveness. Let her go herself to her in-laws’ home, win over her mother-in-law and father-in-law, take up the housework and ask for forgiveness, and you too should intercede for her; may Allah Most High soften their hearts so that they forgive.
