The Minimum Duration of Hayd
Question
The minimum duration of hayd is three days; hayd does not occur for less than that. But if some woman has [bleeding] in a month for only one day and a half — one and a half — or two days, what is the ruling on it? Will it be counted as hayd or not?
Answer
That is not hayd but istihada; such a woman is mumtaddat al-tuhr (one whose period of purity has become prolonged). [ar]أقل الحيض ثلاثة أيام ولياليها، وما نقص من ذلك فهو استحاضة[/ar] “The minimum of hayd is three days and their nights, and whatever falls short of that is istihada” (al-Hidaya).
