What a gland is and its ruling
Question
There is a mas’ala in “Tadhkirat al-Rashid”, vol. 1, p. 174, that seven things of a lawful animal are forbidden to eat, and one of these seven things is the gland. Please explain what the gland is. Commonly, what comes out of the tubular bone or out of the trotters is called the gland, and people usually eat it with great relish. Tell us: is eating it halal or haram?
Answer
Blood congeals and takes the form of a lump (like a fruit stone); this is called ghudda, and in Urdu it is this that is called “ghudud” (gland). As for what comes out of the trotters and other bones, it is called marrow; eating it is in order.
