A Hanafi combining two prayers behind a non-Hanafi imam
Question
On the day of ‘Arafa, the ninth of Dhu l-Hijja, it is prescribed to perform both prayers, zuhr and ‘asr, together in congregation in Masjid Namira. If a Hanbali imam leads the prayer in this mosque, is it correct in such a case, according to Hanafi fiqh, for the worshipper to shorten (qasr) [the prayer], given that the imam performs both these prayers shortened? According to Hanbali fiqh, does qasr become wajib at [a distance of] four or five miles?
Answer
In this case the Hanafi should not pray behind this imam; he should perform the two prayers separately, each in its own time.
