Details Regarding the Verse of Prostration
Question
These two hadiths are reported in Sahih Muslim and Jami‘ al-Tirmidhi, and Ibn Kathir cited them in his tafsir (Juz 18 and 22). They create some confusion, so please provide clarification. (a) Surah al-Hajj has been given the virtue of two prostrations; whoever does not prostrate at them should not recite it. (b) The people of Hell are five types. Among them are insignificant people who are poor, without wealth or homes, and who cling to your garments.
Answer
(a) After reciting a verse of prostration, it is recommended to perform the prostration (sajdah) promptly. A person without ablution may recite the Qur’an, but he cannot perform the prostration of recitation. Therefore it is better to recite the Qur’an while in a state of wudu, so that when a verse of prostration appears he may immediately perform the prostration.
