Ending the prayer with “Allahu akbar” instead of the salam

Question

If, when giving the salam, a person forgetfully says “Allahu akbar” (الله أكبر) instead of “al-salamu ‘alaykum” (السلام عليكم), is the prayer valid or not?

Answer

The word “al-salam” is wajib; its omission makes sajda al-sahw wajib, and if sajda al-sahw was not performed, repeating (i‘ada) [the prayer] will be wajib.
