Method of Making Up Missed Prayers (Qada)

Question

If a person has many missed prayers but does not remember their exact number, and he wants to make them up, what should he do? How should he perform them? Can he perform several prayers of different times in one sitting, or should he make up only one prayer corresponding to each time?

Answer

He may perform many missed prayers in one sitting. In fact, instead of performing voluntary (nafl) prayers, he should perform qada prayers, until his heart becomes confident that no missed prayers remain upon him. For each qada prayer he should make an intention like this. For example: “I intend to perform the earliest missed Zuhr prayer that remains upon me.”
