Praying with money on one’s person
Question
Regarding the prohibition, found in the hadiths, of keeping pictures in the house, many people argue that it is a prohibition of hand-made pictures, not of photographs. Others say: how can one keep on one’s person something bearing the image of a living being, such as banknotes and coins, and how can the prayer be performed while they are on one’s person? Please answer both points thoroughly.
Answer
A picture made by hand and a picture made by photography have one and the same ruling in the Shari‘a. As for banknotes and coins: firstly, the picture on them is small and no honour is accorded to it; secondly, during the prayer it remains hidden in the pocket or in some other garment and is not in front of one.
