Definition of a Ma‘dhūr (excused person) and his imamate
Question
If a ḥāfiẓ who is a ma‘dhūr (for example, one afflicted with constant passing of wind or a similar condition) leads the Tarāwīḥ prayer for people who are not ḥuffāẓ, will their prayer be valid according to any of the imams? Some people say it becomes valid if we intend to follow the position of Zufar or Mālik. Is this statement correct? Is there any difference regarding the permissibility of the imamate of a ma‘dhūr between obligatory prayers and voluntary prayers?
Answer
A person who has a Shariah excuse due to which his state of purification cannot remain intact cannot lead in prayer those who do not have such a condition, whether the prayer is obligatory or otherwise. A ma‘dhūr is one for whom the time of one prayer passes without him being able to perform the prayer while maintaining purification. This is the limit (definition) of a ma‘dhūr.
