The Tailed Star (Comet)

Question

These days, here at around three o’clock at night, a tailed star [comet] appears. Previously this star used to rise in the north; now it rises in the east. Many rumours are circulating among the common people about this. Please clarify: is anything established in the Shari‘a regarding such stars, or not? What is the Shari‘a position of this star? Also, can the conjectures of common people on this matter be relied upon, and if so, to what extent? Please give a detailed answer.

Answer

In the book “al-Isha‘a li-Ashrat al-Sa‘a”, on p. 157, a hadith of Hazrat Ibn ‘Abbas ﵁ is cited (on the authority of Ibn Mardawayh) stating that when such-and-such [evil] deeds begin to occur, a tailed star will rise. The gist of this is: when sincerity no longer remains in worship, disobedience intensifies, and the limits set by Allah (hudud Allah)
