The Manner of the Funeral Prayer over the Prophet ﷺ

Question

Question: Hazrat Ibn Mas‘ud ﵁ relates that the Prophet ﷺ said to Hazrat Abu Bakr al-Siddiq ﵁: “When you have washed me and shrouded me, set the bier in this chamber of mine at the edge of the grave, and go outside for a while, for the first to pray over me will be my Lord, Mighty is He and Glorious, for He and His angels continually send down mercy [upon me].

Answer

In the “Tabaqat” of Ibn Sa‘d this report does appear, but [in its chain] is al-Waqidi, who is a weak (da‘if) narrator; moreover, the report itself is mursal (with a break in the chain). ‘Allama al-‘Iraqi said the same in his takhrij, as noted in the margin of “Ihya’ ‘Ulum al-Din”, vol. 4, p. 400.
