Opening a Gathering with Qur’an Recitation in the Presence of Hindu Political Figures
Question
Both Hindus and Muslims are present at a political gathering; this gathering has been held on the occasion of the arrival of Hindu leaders, and some Hindus wish the gathering to be opened with a recitation of the Noble Qur’an. In this case, is reciting [the Qur’an] permissible or not? Note: if it is not recited, there is a fear of [being accused of] bias.
Answer
If the recitation is done with the intention that their hearts be moved by the Word of Allah and thereby drawn closer to Islam, there is latitude for it. But if it is done merely as a formality or in their honour, it is not permitted.
