The Meaning of ‘Call Upon Me, I Will Respond to You’
Question
Question: Regarding [the verse] “Call upon Me — I will respond to you” — is it better to have firm certainty (yaqin) in the acceptance [of a supplication], or is it [also permissible] to think “I do not know whether it will be so or not”? That is, since a promise of its fulfilment is attached to a supplication (du‘a)
Answer
Among the etiquettes (adab) of supplication (du‘a) is this: one should have full confidence in the acceptance of the supplication, [relying on the promise]: “I will respond to you” — but [adding]: “If, in the knowledge of the Almighty, the non-fulfilment of this supplication according to my wish is better for me, then I am content with that.”
