Feeding the Wedding Procession
Question
In some Muslim biradaris (kinship or caste communities), the following practice is prevalent at weddings: when the boy’s side comes with the groom’s wedding procession to the bride’s house, all the members of the procession, women and men included, are fed; this is commonly called “the wedding procession meal”. Some people consider the wedding procession meal necessary because without it they would lose their respect and standing in the biradari, or there would be disgrace.
Answer
In the blessed time of the noble Prophet ﷺ weddings did not have the pomp that is prevalent nowadays. Hazrat ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn ‘Awf ﵁ married and did not invite the Messenger of Allah ﷺ — indeed, he did not even inform him. Likewise the incident of Hazrat Jabir ibn ‘Abdullah ﵁ is mentioned in the books of hadith.
