Eating at the Bride’s Family’s Home at a Wedding
Question
Zayd, at the marriage contract ('aqd) of the girl, gives a meal for relatives and friends, but ‘Amr says that eating food from the girl’s side is not permissible. So what is the ruling on eating at the girl’s family’s home? For the guests of the groom’s wedding procession to eat in a hotel and not eat at the girl’s home — that is a custom of the Hindus. What is the ruling of the Shari‘a?
Answer
It is correct that the walima is to be given by the boy or his guardians (awliya’). But those who come as guests to the girl’s family’s house, whose purpose is to take part in the wedding and who have moreover been invited — where, after all, will they go to eat? Feeding one’s guest is a command of the Shari‘a, and the noble Prophet ﷺ strongly urged it.
