Consummation before the prompt mahr is paid

Question

A husband goes to his wife to spend the wedding night and does not have the mahr forgiven. What is the ruling? That is, may he spend the wedding night without the mahr having been forgiven or not?

Answer

If intercourse took place even without the mahr being forgiven, it is not impermissible; but the wife has the right to withhold intercourse until she has received the prompt mahr (mu‘ajjal).
