Is it forbidden to go in to one’s wife without giving the mahr?

Question

It is widely held among us that until the mahr is paid, going in to one’s wife is haram. Is this correct or not?

Answer

This is incorrect. However, it is better to give the wife something at that very time. Yes, concern for paying the mahr and effort to pay it are necessary — it is her right.
