A Grandson Is Not to Be Called Illegitimate Because His Maternal Grandmother Was Unchaste
Question
Question: There is a woman who, ma sha’ Allah, is religious, and her husband is also religious, but people declare the children and the children’s mother to be haram and say that the children’s maternal grandmother was an unchaste woman (fahisha). For this reason people forbid marrying this woman’s son and say that marrying an illegitimate person is haram. Is it permissible to marry in such a situation or not? If the young man is illegitimate but, ma sha’ Allah, religious, is it permissible to marry him or not?
Answer
To call any child illegitimate because his maternal grandmother was unchaste is haram and a major sin (kabira). If there were a government in accordance with the Noble Qur’an, those who say such things would be given an exemplary punishment. The marriage of such children is entirely valid.
