Nikah through an Agent or by Letter

Question

Can a young man and a young woman contract nikah secretly of their own accord or not? Is it necessary for the nikah of both to take place on one and the same day, or can there be an interval of two to four days? For example, the nikah of one on Monday and of the other on Thursday?

Answer

If both are present in the gathering, or one is present and some agent (wakil) is present on behalf of the other, that too suffices; there is no need for two gatherings, and this very form is appropriate and better.
