My Parents Want My Nikah in One Place and I in Another: What Should Be Done?
Question
If I do not marry, it is a sin. It is not my aim to lead a life of sin, that is, I will keep myself under control — will I still be sinful? I want to marry according to my own choice; my parents do not agree, they want to arrange it somewhere else. If I refuse them I will be a sinner — whereas in Islam a boy or a girl should not be married without their consent.
Answer
In a state of moderation (i‘tidal), marrying is a sunna. Whoever, despite having the ability and the need, does not marry is deprived of this sunna. When passions overpower, marrying is wajib. If one has no ability to fulfil the rights and there is fear of wrongdoing, marrying is forbidden. Therefore everyone’s situation is not the same.
