The Ruling on the Nikah If the Husband Becomes a Shia
Question
A Sunni woman’s nikah was contracted with a Sunni man, and she lived with him in marriage for about eight or nine years. But through the misfortune of his deeds this man abandoned the Sunni madhhab and entered the madhhab of the Shias who publicly revile the Companions (tabarra) and began brazenly using, God forbid, even words such as “oppressor” and “usurper” about the three Caliphs ﵃.
Answer
Calling a Muslim a disbeliever is disbelief. There is consensus (ijma‘) on the Islam and faith of the three Caliphs ﵃, and calling them disbelievers will certainly be disbelief. Their caliphate too is established by consensus, so using words such as “oppressor” and “usurper” about these noble figures is likewise contrary to consensus, and is therefore disbelief.
