Must the Man Who Committed Zina Marry the Woman He Made Pregnant?

If Rashida has conceived from Zayd through an unlawful relationship, has it become binding on Zayd to marry Rashida compulsorily? If not, what is the Shar‘i principle in such a situation? And if it is binding, then why? Please explain this case on a Shar‘i basis.

Answer

It is not binding; however, Rashida ought to agree to marry Zayd, for in this there is protection from many trials (fitna). This is how it is in al-Zayla‘i.
