Nikah by Means of a Letter

Question

The groom is in Africa and the bride in India, and the nikah is to be performed. What is the way to do it? Please write briefly.

Answer

The bride or her guardian (wali) should give permission by letter to the groom or his guardian, and on the arrival of that letter the groom or his guardian should conduct the offer and acceptance (ijab and qabul) in the presence of witnesses. For example, the bride wrote: “I appoint you my agent (wakil): contract my nikah with yourself.
