Having the Groom Recite the Kalima and Pray Two Rak‘as at the Time of Nikah

Question

(1) What is the sunna method of performing a nikah? How did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ perform nikah? (2) What is the status of having a Muslim bridegroom recite all five kalimas, as well as “Iman Mujmal” and “Iman Mufassal” (the brief and detailed statements of faith), at the time of nikah, as is widely customary nowadays in some areas? Is this a sunna of nikah, or is it among the mustahabb things?

Answer

(1) The khutba is to be recited and the offer and acceptance conducted; by this alone the nikah takes place. But this much is necessary: that it be in the presence of witnesses; if the girl is an adult (baligha), her permission must be sought, and if she is a minor, the guardian (wali) himself has the authority; the mahr should also be fixed.
