Punishment of the Abductor: Boycott by the Biradari (a kinship or caste community)
Question
Mumtaz Ali, a tailor, ran off with Shukrullah’s wife. For some days he wandered about here and there; when these people returned home, Shukrullah divorced his wife (talaq). After the ‘idda, Mumtaz Ali had his nikah with this woman performed. Now the headman of the weavers has forbidden all the Muslims of the village to have any conversation with any of the tailors — he has even had greetings (salam) and supplications stopped. Who is on the right path, and with whom should I stand?
Answer
Carrying off another man’s wife, and a woman running away with a strange man, is by reason and by custom extremely shameful, and by the Shari‘a a grave sin and act of disobedience. Shukrullah did well to divorce her. After the ‘idda, Mumtaz Ali the tailor married her, and that became permissible.
