Taking incense sticks and the like to the istisqa' prayer
Question
While going to the istisqa' prayer, along the way a few of all the people (taking part) recited supplicatory poems and na‘t (poems in praise of the Prophet ﷺ) in a loud voice and carried lit incense sticks with them. In any case, this is how it is being done — is this practice in accordance with the Sacred Law or not, and what is the correct practice?
Answer
This way was adopted wrongly. For the istisqa' prayer one should go wearing old, patched clothes, with humility and submissiveness (khushu‘ and khudu‘), with eyes lowered out of remorse and shame for one's sins.
