Jumu‘a in a Village of Three to Four Thousand People
Question
On the bank of the river Jhelum, on the Delhi Road, there is a village where a congregational mosque (jami‘) has been built; adjoining it there is also a bazaar with about twenty shops, and there are some craftsmen as well, and a gathering of about three or four thousand people can assemble [there]. If people gather on Friday, tabligh (the call to religion) can be carried out among them. Is it permissible to perform Jumu‘a here?
Answer
If there is a population there at present and that settlement has the status of a large village (qarya kabira) — that is, its population by census is about three thousand, everyday necessities are always available there, and in the bazaar there is a post office and the like — then the Jumu‘a prayer there is valid.
