Serving as head of a community council despite opposition from the community
Question
Question: About fifteen months ago a few men made me the head of the community council of the biradari (clan community) of the Bhishtis (a caste of water-carriers). But when the matter of the headship of the community council came before the community, people to the extent of twelve annas (out of the sixteen annas of a rupee) opposed it, and ever since the disagreement has persisted as before, and several times I have also had to suffer embarrassment before the community. So what should I do in this situation?
Answer
If, with you as head of the community council, the reform of the community through you is to be expected — so that wrong customs come to an end and life is shaped in accordance with the rulings of the Shari'a — then remain head of the council, and deal with those who oppose you with wisdom and good management; may Allah Most High help you.
