The dome over the Blessed Rawda ﷺ
Question
Why were the shrine of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ — the master of both worlds — [and] the dome [over it] made brick-built? Was this arranged during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, or after his passing — in the time of the caliph and the noble Companions ﵃, under a Shari‘a-based Islamic government? For his actual resting place is entirely unbaked. And who built it? And are incense sticks, frankincense, oud, flowers and the like burned at the blessed shrine of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?
Answer
The actual resting place is unbaked even now. In the time of al-Walid ibn ‘Abd al-Malik the unbaked (mud-brick) chamber was demolished and rebuilt with carved stones, and an enclosure (hazira) was made. Hazrat ‘Urwa ﵁ even forbade [this], but he was not heeded.
