Building domes over graves

Question

Is it permissible to construct a solid dome over the ordinary graves of Muslims or over the graves of scholars, righteous people, and awliya (friends of Allah), or to build the grave in a solid manner? Please provide the answer with references from the Noble Qur’an and the reliable books of Hanafi jurisprudence.

Answer

Constructing a grave in a solid manner and erecting solid structures such as domes over graves is legally impermissible and prohibited. This prohibition is established through Hadith and through Hanafi jurisprudence, and it is explicitly transmitted from Imam Abu Hanifa, may Allah have mercy on him. Imam Muhammad, may Allah have mercy on him, writes in Kitab al-Athar (p. 43)
